Considerable interest has been focused on the synthesis of biodegradable polymers in specializedapplications such as controlled release drug formulations, insecticide and pesticide carriers, andnontoxic surgical implant materials. For many agricultural and ecological uses it is desirable tohave a biodegradable polymer that will degrade in a physiological environment or by microbial actionin the soil.
