Key Points Question How frequently are opioid prescriptions filled by patients when their family members are engaged in prescriber and pharmacy shopping (“doctor and pharmacy shopping”)? Findings In this cross-sectional analysis of nearly 1.5 million opioid prescription fills by 554 417 US adults and children with private family plans in 2016, 8485 (0.6%) fills occurred at the time that at least 1 family member met criteria for prescriber and pharmacy shopping. Meaning Findings suggest the potential for opioid diversion within families and highlight the importance of avoiding excessive opioid prescribing.
