We investigated the nonlinear effects of gravity-driven fluid flow through atwo-dimensional, low-porosity, packed bed of stubby stone grains. We focused onpreferential channel formation, tortuosity, spatial distribution of kineticenergy, and vortex formation. We show that nonlinear effects dominate atrelatively high Reynolds numbers, even though the deviation from Darcy's law isnot visible in friction factor measurements. We further notice an increasedflow asymmetry of the flow field revealed by vorticity analysis and surprisingcorrelation between tortuosity and apparent permeability in the inertial flowregime.
