To overcome limitations of antibiotics like microbial resistance, systemic side effects and limitation of spectrum of microorganisms affected, an effective and alternative therapy needs to replace the conventional treatment. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) consists of a photoactive dye (photosensitizer) that is activated by specific wavelength light in the presence of oxygen. PDT has shown potential in the treatment of oral leukoplakia, oral lichen planus, and head and neck cancer, treatment of bacterial, fungal, parasitic, and viral infections.
