Many and varied statistics are available to describe the health of a population. None can fully do justice to the health problems faced by the whole of the local community. We have presented the data for this article in two sections: general vital statistics and statistics in support of the Health of the Nation initiative. The vital statistics are for the calendar year 1991. Due to the small number of cases in some of the disease categories, the Health of the Nation statistics are averaged annual statistics for the period 1989 to 1991.
