Recent monthly data from the Paraná River show that its hydrochemistry is controlled by the nature of the rocks in the basin, with significant contributions from saline environments during low discharge. The discharge‐weighted mean dissolved salts concentration (79.8 mg liter ‒1 ) allows a new calculation of 56.7 mg liter ‒1 for the mean dissolved salts concentration of South American rivers.
