Transition to parenthood represents an\udimportant life event increasing vulnerability to\udpsychological disorders. Postpartum depression\udand parenting distress are the most common\udpsychological disturbances and a growing\udscientific evidence suggests that both mothers\udand fathers are involved in this developmental\udcrisis. This paper aims to explore maternal and\udpaternal experience of transition to parenthood\udin terms of parenting distress and risk of\udpostpartum depression. Seventy-five couples of\udfirst-time parents were invited to compile the\udEdinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the\udParenting Stress Index-Short Form in the first\udmonth of children life. Study sample reported\udvery high levels of parenting distress and a risk\udof postpartum depression in 20.8% of mothers\udand 5.7% of fathers. No significant correlation\udbetween parenting distress and the risk of\udpostpartum depression emerged, both in mothers\udthan in fathers group while maternal distress\udlevels are related to paternal one. The\udfirst month after partum represents a critical\udphase of parents life and it could be considered\uda developmental crisis characterized by anxiety,\udstress and mood alterations that could\udhave important repercussions on the child psycho-\udphysical development
