The article describes the process of deciphering several gravestone inscrip- tions of the necropolises of Southern Dagestan. The technique based on a step-by-step transition from a hypothesis to its confirmation or refutation is demonstrated. The necessity of an integrated interdisciplinary approach to the problems of decoding and analysis of epitaphs has been substantiated.
