T his article is a description of the preliminary stages of a study of articulatory behaviour. An attempt is made to show how improvement in physical and physiological techniques in both research and treatment requires a similar level of development in the application of psychological principles. No attempt has been made at this stage to relate performance to linguistic criteria above the phonological level. Such a step is obviously as important as either psychological or physiological analyses.
