Summary The efficiencies of the sampling procedure proposed by Rao, Hartley and Cochran (1962) and the well‐known ratio method of estimation are compared for simple random sampling without replacement with the aid of a particular model of a finite population. The applicability of these methods to sampling on two successive occasions is investigated.
