Macroeconomic data on the Spanish economy during the Second Republic is notaccurate, the interpretation of historical events from the figures obtained isdivergent and misleading. Hasty laws were enacted in attempts to resolve socialproblems arising mainly from deep economic inequalities, but they were oftennothing more than declarations of good intentions. Spain suffered in theaftermath of the international economic downturn as it began to be felt at theend of the dictatorship of General Primo de Rivera. Economic policy wasdeveloped under the Constitution,but, despite the differences between the firstand second biennium, there was a tendency to maintain the guidelines from theprevious stage and in general, sometimes unfairly, it aimed at least to avoidthe destabilization of the financial system. Nonetheless, it ultimately failedto achieve its goals, mainly because of the frequent changes of governmentmediated by a social crisis of greater significance that had relegated economicissues into the background.
