Abstract This paper compares the cathode luminescence UV‐spectra and microstructure of MgO, MgO:Si, MgO:Sc, and Mg 0.85 Ca 0.15 O crystals. The shift of the UV emission peaks is discussed and a hypothesis is proposed to explain both the different emission characteristics, and the possible relationship with exoemission and secondary electron emission.
