Abstract— The optical properties of the field‐off state of a general twisted‐nematic liquid‐crystal display (TN‐LCD) are investigated by using the simple Jones matrix method. Analytic expressions for the transmission properties of the display are obtained. Without resorting to differential equations, the author obtained results which are identical to those obtained previously by using Riccati differential equations. These analytic expressions are extremely useful for explaining the working mechanism of the conventional TN‐LCDs and various STN, OMI, and LTN‐LCDs. In addition, they are also useful for the experimental measurement of the cell gap and twist angle of a general TN‐LCD.
