Based on a sample of youngsters from the final classes of primary school who come from complete families (N = 112) and from families without a father (N = 73) an investigation was carried out with the aim of establishing whether these two groups differed in their satisfaction with family life. It was investigated whether the two groups differed in their interaction with the mother (in intimacy, requests, harshness, neglect and giving). The results showed that based on the structure of the families there was no difference in satisfaction of family life, and that family satisfaction was strongly connected with the type of interaction rather than the structure of the family. In the dimension of interaction which reflect the expressive functions, there was no difference between the mothers of groups of young boys or girls from complete or deficient families. The structure of the families was modified only by the dimension of demands which defined the instrumental function of the mother.
