The solubility of indium in the gallides  RE NiGa 4  (YNiAl 4  type structure,  RE  = Y, Gd, Tb) at 870 K and the unit cell parameters of the solid solutions were determined. The crystal structure of TbNiGa 3.17 In 0.83  (space group  Cmcm ,  oS 24,  a  = 0.41529(2) nm,  b  = 1.55140(8) nm,  c  = 0.66136(4) nm,  R 1 = 0.0162, w R 2 = 0.0280, 500  F  2  values, 25 variables) was refined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The TbNiGa 4– x  In   x    samples were characterized for their magnetic properties. They were found to order antiferromagnetically below the Néel temperature  T  N  = 20 K, independent of  x  spanning from 0 to 0.5.
