Cell walls ofSalmonella enteritidis were extracted with phenol and with ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA). Phenol extracts were consistently more antigenic in chickens than EDTA extracts. Differences in the action of EDTA and phenol upon bacterial cell walls were demonstrated by the use of radioisotopes.
