SHEPHERDSON, J. C. Inverses and Zero Divisors in Matrix Rings. The statement at the end of the second paragraph on p. 81, ‘ …yet the first of these occurrences is always farther to the left than the original occurrence’, is false. It should be replaced by ‘yet there is a decrease of one in the total number of occurrences of pairs x, y, with x to the left of y (although not necessarily adjacent to it)’. On line 21 of p. 81 ‘α ij , σ( j )’ should be replaced by ‘α ijσ(j) ’.
