We show that for any integers  n  > 3 and 1 ⩽  d  ⩽  n  − 3, there exist Montesinos knots with  n  tangles whose SL 2 (ℂ)‐character varieties have arbitrarily many irreducible components of dimension  d . Moreover, these irreducible components can be chosen so that the trace of the meridian is non‐constant.
