The Spectrum of a Derivation of a C * ‐Algebra

This paper considers a *‐derivation δ of a C * ‐algebra u and shows that its spectrum (as an operator on u ) is completely determined by the spectra of the operators a n which generate δ in each factor representation π of u . Several applications to derivations and automorphisms are given.
