Recent research in psychotherapy has emphasized its scientific and technological status. It is argued that the ‘doing to’ functions in therapy omit essential considerations of intentionality and meaning. The problematic nature of change is considered and some fundamental ‘deep structural’ commitments in therapy are proposed.
