Summary The primary object of this paper is to urge the value of factor analysis as a means of investigating psychiatric problems and to illustrate its use by an experimental study of the efficacy of a particular drug (benactyzine) in the treatment of anxiety‐neuroses. At the same time it is argued that the details of the technique employed indicate a method whereby factors whose interpretation would otherwise remain obscure may be identified experimentally.
