Purpose To provide an overview over the clinical need and recent developments regarding biomaterials for ocular surface reconstruction. Methods Epithelial and stroma substitutes will be presented, as well as own data generated by electrospinning of a biodegradable elastomer. Results Biofilms can be created and are sucessfully applied both on a research and on a clinical level. Conclusion Biomaterials will become a reality in ophthalmosurgery.
