PURPOSE. To describe the relationship between caregiver diabetes knowledge and socioeconomic factors on glycemic outcomes of young children with type 1 diabetes.DESIGN AND METHODS. Seventy‐three caregivers of children less than 9 years of age were conveniently sampled and completed the Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center Diabetes Knowledge Test and a demographic questionnaire.RESULTS. Higher caregiver knowledge was associated with lower hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) levels, higher income levels, and being married. Thirty‐three (44%) children had HbA1clevels within the target range.PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS. Perform ongoing knowledge assessments and educational interventions related to deficits, with a special focus on families in lower socioeconomic situations.
