This article traces the rise of the Orientalist movement in India from late eighteenth‐century beginnings and its influence on Romantic period writers. I discuss the variety of Romantic responses to Indian culture and conclude with an overview of modern criticism and theory dealing with British writing about the Subcontinent between 1780–1830.
