A simple, inexpensive and easily made device is described in which specimens can be freeze‐dried on electron microscope grids before shadowing. The device can be used with almost any type of vacuum coating unit, and can take up to twenty grids from four different samples under identical conditions. Freeze‐drying with this device, as compared to air‐drying, considerably improved preservation of particles of plant viruses, and it was also suitable for other types of electron microscope specimens.
