Exponential pulse waveform in electric fishing gave a significantly poorer capture efficiency than other waveforms evaluated. Plasma cortisol levels were significantly and uniformly elevated after shocking by all waveforms. Mortality from the electric fishing was low, 0·2% overall, with few sub‐lethal effects. A 0·5 ms duration square pulse waveform had significantly higher catch‐per‐unit‐power than the other waveforms.
