This article surveys the available explanations for why presidential discourse adopts the patterns it does and then suggests new ways of studying the presidency in the future. The article's operat‐ingpremises are these: (1) presidential scholars have been insufficiently attentive to theory building in the past, (2) the available ontological explanations for presidential discourse should be reinterrogated, (3) scholars need to go beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries when studying the presidency, and (4) a number of exciting new areas of study beckon on the basis of the preceding assumptions.
