. All of the features of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) and most characteristics of C 4 photosynthesis are exhibited by stomatal guard cells. It is proposed that CAM and possibly also C 4 photosynthesis result from the expression in photosynthetic cells of genetic information which is expressed only in guard cells of C 3 plants.
