This research paper introduces a novel double-stator (DS) hybrid-excited (HE) flux reversal permanent magnet (FRPM) machine with Halbach PM arrays, specifically designed for electric vehicle (EV) traction applications. The study commences with a detailed description of the operating principle of the proposed machine. The machine design incorporates a comprehensive sensitivity analysis of its structural design variables, followed by a multi-objective optimization utilizing the NSGA-II algorithm. The results clearly show that the proposed DS-HE-FRPM machine outperforms the benchmark in several key aspects while adhering to the same PM volume constraint. It exhibits significantly improved back electromotive force, and substantially lower cogging torque. Notably, when compared to the benchmark, the optimized structure of the DS-HE-FRPM machine highlights a notable 22.4% enhancement in electromagnetic torque, while effectively keeping torque ripple at a low level. The underlying reasons behind these notable improvements of the proposed machine structure are explained in detail, providing a comprehensive understanding of their rationales. These findings suggest that the innovative DS-HE-FRPM machine holds significant torque potential, which could greatly enhance the performance and efficiency of EVs. This represents a highly promising development in the field of traction applications.
