Hedyotis diffusa Ameliorates fatty liver in mice fed a high‐fat and high‐sucrose diet

Obesity is associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and fatty liver. The purpose of this study is to examine effect of Hedyotis diffusa on hepatic steatosis in C57BL/6 mice with diet‐induced obesity. Four‐week‐old C57BL/6 mice (n=21) were divided in to three groups after 1 week of adaptation period. The animals were fed AIN‐93G diet (Normal group, NC group), a high‐fat and high‐sucrose diet (35% fat and 25% sucrose, HFHS group), or HFHS diet containing 1 % ethanol extract of Hedyotis diffusa (HFHS‐HD group) for 12 weeks. Serum adiponectin levels were measured by ELISA. Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities were measured. Hepatic lipids were extracted and triglyceride and cholesterol levels were measured. Hedyotis diffusa significantly decreased body weight compared with HFHS group (p<0.05). Serum adiponectin levels of HFHS‐HD group were significantly higher than those of HFHS group. Serum ALT and AST activities of HFHS‐HD group were significantly lower than HFHS group. Hepatic triglyceride and cholesterol levels were significantly reduced by consumption of Hedyotis diffusa compared with HFHS group. Thus we conclude that Hedyotis diffusa could be beneficial in improving hepatic steatosis in C57BL/6 mice fed a HFHS diet.
