A number of transporters which translocate various compounds were identified and functionally characterized over the last 20 years. We cloned a novel SLC transporter gene which is located on chromosome 12q13.13 and encodes a 450 amino acid protein. Although the closest subfamily to this transporter is glucose transporter family, the identity of the amino acid sequence is less than 20%. However, 95% of amino acids in mouse ortholog are identical. This novel transporter may belong to a novel SLC transporter subfamily and play an important role.
