Phase formation and magnetic properties of (Nd 1−x Y x ) 14 Fe 80 B 6 (x = 0.1–0.8) alloys were investigated experimentally by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The phase structure analysis reveals that the as-cast (Nd 1−x Y x ) 14 Fe 80 B 6 alloys were made of 2:14:1 phase with tetragonal Nd 2 Fe 14 B-tpyed structure, REFe 2 and α -Fe phases, while the melt-spun ribbons are composed of 2:14:1 phase and α -Fe Phase. Based on the magnetic measurements, the remanence (B r ), the coercivity (H cj ), the maximum magnetic energy product ((BH) max ) and the Curie temperatures (T c ) of (Nd 1−x Y x ) 14 Fe 80 B 6 ribbons reduces gradually with increasing Y substitution. The relatively high coercivity (6.75 kOe) of (Nd 0.4 Y 0.6 ) 14 Fe 80 B 6 ribbon with high Y substitution was achieved, which indicates that good magnetic properties of Nd–Y–Fe–B ribbons would be obtained through the design of alloy composition and phase formation.
