The power system’s development is facing a substantial environmental bottleneck, and the key to solving this problem is energy-saving and emission reduction. Based on the environmental effects, firstly, the research results of energy-saving and emission reduction in different development stages of power system HVDC power supply are summarized. Our research found that in the traditional power grid stage, most scholars focused on the environmental cost of pollutants on the power generation side; in the development of the smart grid stage, the research included quantitative analysis of energy-saving and emission reduction, economic analysis, and comprehensive evaluation, and there were many results and shortcomings. Based on summarizing the current results, future research on power system energy saving and emission reduction based on environmental effects prospects, and the critical research contents of future smart grids, integrated energy systems, and energy Internet are discussed.
