In this paper a small-scale drinking water quality detection system that can be used for real-time evaluation of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is presented. The DOM detection is based on the principle that the intensity of the laser-induced fluorescence signal is proportional to the DOM concentration. In experiment, the DOM concentration of sodium humate solution and the TDS value of NaCl solution are tested, respectively. In addition, drinking water and tap water before and after purification are also detected by the system. The quality of purified water is significantly higher than that before purification. Detection results obtained in our laboratory indicate that the system described in this paper can detect the organic and inorganic contents of drinking water. Advantages of our system are small volume, high sensitivity and high precision.
