Low phase noise RF oscillator is very important in modern communication systems and opto‐electronic oscillator techniques have achieved superior phase noise. Development and characterisation of coupled symmetric multimode multi‐section semiconductor laser pairs are reported for building a chip level RF oscillator. The symmetric laser structure operation is adjusted to achieve a self‐mode locking of five modes at 26.4 GHz inter‐modal oscillation frequency with the phase noise performance of −92 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset frequency.
