Matrix equations, as occur in the techniques of least squares estimation and prediction, transform into equivalent array equations when the data are gridded. The mathematical model and the weight matrix associated with the data must also conform to certain requirements for this transformation. In comparison to the matrix equations the array equations result in significant savings in the number of computations and in the required storage.
