Daily ozone soundings made at Payerne, Switzerland, during the first intensive period of the FGGE which contained a sudden stratospheric warming are discussed. The variance of ozone and temperature in the middle stratosphere was much higher than normal and the same is true for the correlation between the two quantities and for that between ozone and meridional wind component. Maxima and minima of the ozone mixing ratio around the 10 mb level were extremely pronounced and of great interest for our understanding of the transport processes in the middle stratosphere.
