Background:Arteriosclerotic factors have been suggested to be involved in the onset of Alzheimer-type dementia (AD). In the present study, we examined arteriosclerotic factors associated with the onset of AD, and its onset time. Methods: The subjects were 33 patients with AD aged 65 to 87 years (mean, 80 6 5.0) among members for our complete medical checkup program. The control group consisted of 18 elderly persons aged 59 to 85 years (mean, 71.4 6 6.6), with normal cognitive function. Values of body mass index, blood pressure, blood glucose, HbA1c, total serum cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol at the onset of AD and ten years before its onset were evaluated between the AD and healthy groups. Unpaired t-test was used for statistical processing. Results: The mean LDL cholesterol value ten years before AD onset in the AD group was 156.56 38.2 mg/dl, which were statistically significantly high, as compared with 1366 26.7 mg/dl in the healthy group. Conclusions: LDL cholesterol values ten years before AD onset were only involved in its onset.
