A number of derivatives of thiocarboxylic acid were prepared from the reaction of 3‐mercaptopropionic acid and alkyl halides, and screened for anti‐rust properties in water‐soluble metalworking fluids. Aqueous metalworking fluids containing octylthiopropionic acid or hexylthioacetic acid showed excellent anti‐rust properties for water‐soluble metalworking fluids.
