Abstract In this paper, we deal with a theoretical approach to find stress intensity factors for transient thermal loading in an infinite transversely isotropic elastic medium with a penny‐shaped crack the surfaces of which are subjected to a sudden change of temperature. Variations of the stress intensity factors with time are calculated and illustrated in figures.
