A theory including classical elastic‐plastic materials is derived as a special case of the theory of simple material under certain hypotheses of smoothness and rate‐independence. The concepts of yield functions and flow rules of the classical theories are shown to be defined by the stress functional of a simple material under these smoothness hypotheses. A classical strain‐hardening elastic‐plastic material is included as an example.
