Abstract Some years ago Rivlin discovered several exact solutions of the equations of motion of a non‐Newtonian fluid, corresponding to the well‐known Poiseuille and Couette solutions of the Navier‐Stokes equations. In this paper the physical nature of Rivlin's solutions is clarified, and a method is proposed for determining the value of the cross‐viscosity coefficient. In addition, it is shown how certain experiments of Merrington and Weissenberg can be explained by means of the results of the paper.
