Abstract The present status of theoretical predictions for the Lamb shift in heavy few‐electron ions is reviewed. We compare theoretical predictions with experimental data and discuss perspectives of testing quantum electrodynamics in a new region: the region of the strongest electrical fields available at present for experimental study.
