Abstract It is suggested that the limited success which has been the fate of density matrix techniques is a feature not of their inherent limitations but of the restricted class of problems which have been approached. Alternative theoretical techniques in atomic, molecular, and solid‐state studies are proposed, which are grounded in the density matrix formalism, and suggestions are made for new fields in which density matrix methods may expand.
