Abstract We present a microscopic theory, based on the Heisenberg model, to investigate the spin wave spectrum in a magnetic superlattice whose constituents may present the uniaxial and nonuniaxial com‐ ponents of the single‐ion anisotropy. Our calculations are carried out for the exchange‐dominated regime, stressing the contribution of the bulk as well as the surface modes associated with the truncation of the superlattice. We derive general dispersion relations which encompass previous works in the field. Interesting new aspects of the spectrum are obtained due to the presence of the nonuniaxial component of the anisotropic field.
