Abstract It is possible to determine the approximate momentum density of an inhomogeneous electron gas from the corresponding electron density by a semiclassical transformation. For the present by this method it is possible to calculate only isotropic total momentum densities. A method is introduced which can be used to calculate directional momentum densities in some special cases as well as partial momentum densities.
