Abstract A refined equation of state for monovalent metals based on a quantum mechanical version of the cell model is given. Here not only the contribution of free electrons to the equation of state is taken into account but also to a first approximation the effect of anharmonicity of the cell potential is included. The latter refinement results in a considerably improved agreement between theory and experiment.
