Abstract A theory is developed to explain the electroreflectance (ER) of metals in a light energy interval near the photoemission threshold under the assumption that the microscopic mechanism of electromodulation is caused by the dependence of the external photoemission threshold on the field applied. Expressions for electroreflectance are derived containing parameters which depend on the electron structure of surface. The theory is compared with the experiment.
