Abstract The no‐phonon structure occurring in the optical interband absorption spectra of mixed crystals with indirect band structure is investigated. Starting from a simple model for describing Wannier excitons in mixed crystals this structure is shown to be due to disorder‐induced indirect exciton formation. The calculations yield lineshape and composition dependence which are in good agreement with experiment.
