A scalar relativistic one‐particle equation for a spherically symmetric potential is derived by approximately solving the associated Dirac equation. In contrast to the so‐called Pauli equation this approximation remains valid if the electron is very close to the nucleus. Results obtained for W demonstrate the improvement over the Pauli approximation.
